Welcome to chaos. No, really…keep that newborn up for more than an hour, and then you’ll totally know what we’re talking about. Pure chaos, crying, mommy panic, hubby looking wildly and longingly at the front door, heart pounding, and inevitably you’ll be crying too. You know us too well by now to know we sometimes don’t candy coat reality. So, here’s the raw truth for you schedulers out there.
There is a schedule for a reason. What?? Really? (I’m actually smiling at this because I totally goofed at the beginning too!)
When I was expecting The Kid (my now 9-year-old son), we chose to schedule him following the outline given in the book, Baby Wise. In theory, it just made complete sense to me (being a former teacher) because I love order and predictability. It’s just how I work. But reading something BEFORE your baby arrives and then putting it into practice AFTER he/she (they) arrives is like having birth amnesia! OH MY!
Three weeks into The Kid’s life, my husband and I took turns holding him. You see, he cried when we put him down into his bassinet. So, we just didn’t put him down at all. Yes, I HAD READ THE BOOK!! (Reference the birth amnesia comment above!) It wasn’t until friends of ourselves, who saw our juggling act, organized an intervention at Baja Fresh (because we couldn’t put down The Kid), and we came out of our parent comas to regain the prebirth parenting plan! Hello Scheduling…long time, no see.
Part of the reasons behind scheduling is to make it easier to read your infant’s signs and signals for what they need. One being sleep cues. You know…those adorable gigantic yawns, little stretches, rolling eyes (no, they don’t have attitudes yet!!), feisty short cries, wanting to cuddle. YES! They are telling you they are tired! Wah-la!! So, put them down. 😉
Or don’t. And reread the first paragraph in this vlog.
