We know this sounds like a lame topic. It brings back memories of elementary school, when in second grade, you asked the girl in the cutest dress to be your best friend, thus solidifying amazing adventures all the way to third grade! Right?? (We sure picked friends on the right criteria back then…NOT!!)
Well, welcome back ladies, to friendship shopping!
Most of us are going from the work place to maternity leave…or taking a leave of absence…or quitting and staying home, which is an adjustment in and of itself. But, especially if this is your first baby, you will find a “whole new world” (thank you Disney’s Aladdin) for yourself. A world which quite quickly and honestly can become isolating and lonely. Add an unpredictable infant on top of it, and you might want to run away.
We have a friend (who is pregnant with twins right now!!) who moved across the country as a new mom, and before she got involved with MOPS (Mothers of PreSchoolers) said the check-out girls at Target were her friends, because she went EVERY DAY! 😉 Love it! And then she realized 3 minute conversations with the same girls (and the amount of needless money she was spending daily at Target), did not create real, lasting, amazing friendships that she so longed for! So, she began to put herself out there, and wah-la…FRIENDS!! 😉
To be a little more direct: you NEED women to walk this road with you! You NEED women to say, “be there, done that” and even “am there, am doing that”! You NEED women to encourage you, laugh with you (Erin and I laughed this morning at the fact that she can’t find her car keys, and well, that it might be a blessing in disguise to stay home!), cry alongside you, and to give you those well-meaning hugs when the world seems upside down. We were not meant to live as islands, particularly as women. We NEED community!
So, watch Erin and Rebecca discuss the may ways you can friendship shop! And get ready for the “Adventures of the Mommies”! It’s so cool to watch these friendships develop and grow. (And some of these friends are now closer to me than family…they have become sisters-in-motherhood.)
